What is Composite Decking made of?

Composite decking is made from a combination of materials.  One of which is always plastic, many different  types of plastic are used, in most cases the plastic used is recycled. Wood is the other component most commonly used, the wood is typically sawdust or fibbers.

Points of Note

Composite decks are usually framed with pressure treated lumber because of it strength and durability.
Composite decking is much heavier than wood and in turn when framing a deck that is going to have composite deck boards larger joists are more bolts are needed to support the extra weight.

If you are building a second story deck I would not recommend installing a hot tub on ground level beneath your composite deck. The reason is because as the moisture and water vapor are released from your hot tub over time your composite deck may absorbed the moisture  which may cause the deck boards to swell, warp and even rot.  This also applies to installing a hot tub on your composite deck as the overflow for you hot tub and rain water may get underneath the hot tub via the groves in the wood which would then be unable to dry. This could also cause the deck composite boards to swell, warp and even rot.
