What is a Licensed Carpenter and Red Seal Carpenter?
In order to become a licensed "Red Seal Carpenter" you must first become a licensed Journeyman. To become a Journeyman you complete an entrance exam or have proof of education prerequisites. A minimum of 1,360 hours of on-site training is required as an apprentice. Next, you must complete four sessions of technical training including courses pertaining to the essential construction skills including: Footings, Grade Beams & Piles, Framing, Finishing and Curing of Concrete, Energy Efficient Construction, Advanced Roof Framing, Interior Finish and Timber Construction. This in total represents 950 hours of class room study. Once you have successfully passed all of your exams with a minimum of 70% grade, you may then proceed to write the Red Seal exam.
The building laws dictate that when renovating or building a new home, you must have a licensed plumber and electrician. However there is no law stating that you must have a licensed carpenter. Why? This allows anyone off the street to come into your home and present themselves to you as a carpenter or contractor. BEWARE. They may have no education on building codes or structural engineering. Their only experience, in many cases, could be previous work for friends that may or may not have been completed to the Ontario Building Code.
Think about it. Why would you trust one of the largest investments you will ever make to someone who is not licensed? Would you go to a doctor who wasn't licensed? There are numerous cases of disastrous carpenters and contractors who are not licensed and don’t know what they are doing. Why put yourself in this situation? Always consider using a professional with the education and training that consistently produces quality work. You will be much happier with the outcome and your investment will last the test of time.
